In a promising sign for India-US economic ties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US Vice President JD Vance have welcomed substantial progress in negotiations for a long-awaited bilateral trade agreement. The talks are gaining momentum at a time when both nations are seeking to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors, with an aim to finalize a deal by fall this year.
During delegation-level discussions held at the Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi, PM Narendra Modi and Vice President Vance reviewed the status of the trade pact and announced the Terms of Reference for the agreement. This step marks a major move forward, especially following the 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs announced by the US earlier.
Usha Vance, accompanied by his wife Usha Vance and their three children, was warmly received by Narendra Modi, reflecting the personal warmth that has come to define ties between the two countries’ leadership. The meeting followed up on Narendra Modi’s January visit to Washington and his February meeting with US President Donald Trump in Paris.
Momentum toward a fall deadline
Both sides expressed optimism about finalizing a comprehensive trade agreement within the agreed timeline. An interim deal could also be signed in the coming months. A senior Indian delegation is scheduled to travel to the US soon to continue talks, following recent discussions held in India by a visiting American team.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the trade agreement is focused on the welfare of both countries’ citizens. It will likely cover sectors such as energy, defence, and strategic technologies — all areas where the two nations have already ramped up collaboration in recent years.
Strategic cooperation and shared global concerns
In addition to trade, Narendra Modi and JD Vance assessed the broader trajectory of bilateral relations and reiterated their commitment to enhancing strategic ties. They also exchanged views on global and regional developments and advocated for diplomacy and dialogue as tools for resolving conflicts, including the ongoing war in Ukraine.
PM Narendra Modi conveyed his greetings to President Trump and said he was looking forward to his visit to India later this year. He also extended warm wishes to Vice President Vance, the Second Lady, and their children for a fulfilling stay in India. The meeting reaffirmed the growing convergence between India’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision and the US administration’s policy goals under the Make America Great Again agenda.
