  • Ceasefire violated as Pakistani drones spotted in Jammu region

India and Pakistan, after a period of heightened military tension, have agreed to hold talks at the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) level. This comes after a ceasefire was announced on May 10, 2025, signaling an important step toward de-escalation. The ceasefire follows several days of drone and missile strikes between the two nuclear-armed nations, which had escalated tensions to a boiling point.

Ceasefire and DGMO-level Talks

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed the ceasefire, stating that the DGMO from both sides had agreed to halt all military activities. Pakistan’s DGMO reached out to his Indian counterpart on May 10, initiating discussions that paved the way for the ceasefire announcement. India had earlier warned that any future acts of terrorism by Pakistan would be regarded as an act of war, with corresponding military retaliation.

Despite the announcement, Pakistan violated the ceasefire, and drones were observed in parts of Jammu shortly after the truce. Foreign Secretary Misri confirmed the violation during a late-night press conference, emphasizing that India would firmly respond to any further violations along the Line of Control (LoC) or the International Border.

Pope Leo XIV to Meet the Press

In other news, Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff in history, will address journalists today in his first public appearance after his inauguration. The 69-year-old is the 267th pope and will lead over 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide. His formal inauguration Mass is scheduled for May 18, 2025, and his first weekly address will be delivered on May 21. Additionally, Pope Leo XIV will visit key basilicas in Rome, including St. Paul Outside the Walls and St. John Lateran.

South Korea’s Presidential Election Campaign

In South Korea, the campaign period for the presidential election officially begins today. The country is set to hold a snap election on June 3, 2025, to elect a successor to President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed from office last year. The election campaign will run until June 2, a day before voting takes place. Early voting is scheduled for May 29-30. Public officials intending to contest the election must step down by May 4, 2025.

China Hosts Celac Summit

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will attend a summit today and tomorrow (May 13) in China with leaders from the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac). The summit is expected to result in the signing of at least 16 bilateral agreements between Brazil and China. Lula rejoined Celac in 2023 after Brazil had stayed away for three years. China, Brazil’s largest trading partner, will look to strengthen its influence in Latin America, a region where several leaders are calling for collective action against U.S. tariffs.

The news of the ceasefire and the DGMO-level talks between India and Pakistan comes after several days of intense military confrontations. This moment of diplomacy is crucial in preventing further escalation and opens the door to dialogue. The developments in the international arena, such as the Pope’s meetings and the political shifts in South Korea and Brazil, reflect the dynamic political landscape of the region. As both countries work toward a de-escalation of military tensions, the world watches with anticipation.
