In the midst of an intense heatwave gripping parts of India, gig workers like Aman in New Delhi are enduring severe physical and mental challenges. Aman, originally from Bihar, relocated to the capital to support his family by working as a delivery person. However, the scorching temperatures, reaching record highs, have made his daily tasks significantly more difficult.
Aman describes his daily routine of preparing with water and minimal food before braving the intense heat on his two-wheeler. He recounts a frightening incident where he fainted while on a delivery, prompting him to take precautions like carrying water bottles and frequently dousing himself to avoid heat exhaustion.
According to a report by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), rising temperatures in India could reduce daily working hours by nearly 6% by 2030, posing significant challenges for the country’s predominantly informal workforce.
The plight of gig workers like Aman and Sharukh, who works with Zomato, reflects broader issues within India’s gig economy. Sharukh highlights the lack of basic amenities like water and rest areas, particularly at upscale restaurants, where workers often feel marginalized despite their essential role in food delivery services.
The severe heat has not only affected their physical health but also impacted their economic stability. Sharukh notes a decline in daily earnings due to reduced efficiency in extreme weather conditions, a sentiment echoed by Govinda Shah, another gig worker in Gurugram, who faces similar challenges in the adjacent IT hub.
Organizations such as Greenpeace India advocate for stronger measures to protect outdoor workers during heatwaves, calling for comprehensive heat action plans that prioritize their well-being. They emphasize the urgent need for policies ensuring access to basic necessities and reducing working hours during peak temperatures to mitigate risks associated with prolonged exposure to extreme heat.
As India grapples with recurring heatwaves, the resilience of its workforce, particularly gig workers navigating precarious conditions, remains a critical concern amidst calls for enhanced protections and support mechanisms.
