The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast indicating that the heatwave currently gripping northern India will ease starting Thursday, June 20, as a western disturbance approaches the northwest region. The IMD has also issued alerts for various states in light of the severe weather conditions.
Over the past few days, maximum temperatures across the plains of northern India have soared between 44°C to 46°C, significantly exceeding normal levels by 5-8°C. The highest recorded temperature, 47.6°C, was reported in Prayagraj, East Uttar Pradesh.
Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are expected to persist in many parts of Uttar Pradesh until June 20, with some areas experiencing extended heatwave conditions even beyond this date. Additionally, heatwave conditions are likely in north Madhya Pradesh and north Rajasthan on June 19, but a decrease is anticipated thereafter. Warm night to severe warm night conditions are expected in parts of Uttar Pradesh, with warm nights also likely in isolated areas of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on June 19.
Rainfall Forecast:
The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy falls, over sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, and Meghalaya for the next two days. This will be followed by isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall thereafter. Sikkim is also likely to experience widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy showers on June 19, continuing with heavy rainfall from June 20-22.
Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall is forecasted over Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha during the next five days, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph.
Southwest Monsoon Progress:
Favorable conditions are anticipated for the further advancement of the Southwest Monsoon into additional parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Northwest Bay of Bengal, the remaining parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and some parts of Bihar and Jharkhand over the next 3-4 days.
Delhi Weather Update:
In Delhi, heatwave conditions are expected in a few places, but the IMD has downgraded the heatwave alert to ‘orange’ from the severe ‘red’ on Wednesday. Warm nights are anticipated, and there is a possibility of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds at isolated locations, according to the IMD.
