Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has announced a significant change in its admission process, offering students a new pathway to secure a seat outside the JEE Advanced framework. Starting from the 2025-26 academic year, students who have demonstrated excellence in National and International Olympiads will be eligible for direct admission to IIT Madras, marking a major shift in the institute’s selection criteria.
Under this initiative, called ‘Science Olympiad Excellence’ (ScOpE), eligible students will be granted admission based on their achievements in specific Olympiads. This scheme aligns with other special admission categories such as Sports Excellence Admissions and Fine Arts and Culture Excellence modes, which have been introduced to diversify student intake. Each program at IIT Madras will have two supernumerary seats under ScOpE, with one seat exclusively reserved for female candidates. Selection will be based on the ScOpE Rank List (SRL), which evaluates candidates’ performances in five Olympiads: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Informatics, and Biology. The ranking methodology and business rules for the preparation of the ScOpE Rank List will be available on the institute’s official website. Unlike regular JEE-based admissions, applications for this scheme will not be processed through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) but will be managed via a separate portal maintained by IIT Madras.
The first batch of students under the ScOpE program will be admitted starting June 3, 2025. To qualify, candidates must meet the same Class 12 and age-related eligibility criteria as those appearing for JEE Advanced in that respective year. Additionally, they must not have been admitted to an IIT in previous years. Eligible candidates must also be Indian nationals, including Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) whose cards were issued before March 4, 2021. Over the last four years, applicants must have participated in specific Olympiad training camps, including the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camps (IMOTC) for Mathematics, Orientation-cum-Selection Camps (OCSCs) for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, and the International Olympiad for Informatics Training Camp (IOITC).
IIT Madras has listed several programs under the ScOpE admission category, including Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Science and Engineering, and more. The initiative is expected to open doors for students with exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, allowing them to join the prestigious institute without having to clear JEE Advanced. Detailed guidelines and eligibility criteria are available on the official IIT Madras website, where interested students can apply and gather further information.
