A recent collaborative study conducted by professors from several Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) has shed light on the significant shifts observed in Indian society over the past 5 years. Led by Professor Dheeraj Sharma from IIM Rohtak, the study involved researchers from IIM Ahmedabad, Calcutta, Lucknow, Indore, and Rohtak, along with a team of doctoral scholars and research assistants.
Scope and Methodology
The study encompassed a wide range of socio-economic parameters affecting individuals across India. Data was collected through a structured survey distributed across 22 regions and states, targeting various demographics, including farmers, casual workers, housewives, employees, and students.
Key Findings
Trust in Government Services: The study revealed an average trust level of 69.36% in the Government of India nationwide, with Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh recording the highest levels of trust.
Infrastructure Development: Significant improvements in infrastructure were reported, with an average 72% reduction in electricity cuts across the nation. States like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Chhattisgarh showed notable progress in water and electricity supply.
Youth Optimism and Drug Consumption: Gujarat and Maharashtra led in fostering youth optimism and reducing drug consumption, with 66.02% of respondents reporting increased hopefulness among youth.
Agricultural Income: Punjab, Haryana, and Kerala witnessed notable increases in agricultural income, with an average national increase of 39.9%.
Health and Sanitation: Improved sanitation under initiatives like the Swachh Bharat Mission led to better health outcomes, reducing sick days among women across the nation by 18% annually.
Digital Engagement and Entertainment: A 34% surge in spending on digital engagement and entertainment was observed, reflecting increased penetration of OTT platforms and mobile usage.
Labour Market Improvements: Casual workers reported a significant rise in income, reflecting improvements in the labour market, validated by data from trucking companies.
Satisfaction with Public Services: Overall satisfaction with public services increased, with high levels of trust reported in states like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh.
