Hindu College in Delhi has expressed immense pride in its alumna, Harini Amarasuriya, following her recent appointment as the 16th Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. Amarasuriya, representing the National People’s Power (NPP) party, has made history by becoming the first academic-turned-politician to hold this prestigious office and is the third woman to serve as Prime Minister in the country’s history.
In a statement celebrating her achievement, Hindu College noted, “Hindu College proudly celebrates the remarkable achievement of its alumna, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, who has made history by becoming the 16th Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.” The college emphasized the significance of her journey from the institution’s classrooms to the highest political office in Sri Lanka, marking a moment of immense pride for her alma mater.
Harini Amarasuriya is known for her extensive work in education and social justice, alongside her roles as an academic, rights activist, and university lecturer. Her leadership is seen as a pivotal milestone in the landscape of Sri Lankan politics, reflecting a progressive shift towards representation and inclusivity in governance.
Prof. Anju Srivastava, the principal of Hindu College, reflected on Amarasuriya’s academic journey, stating, “Dr. Harini Amarasuriya was a student of the Sociology Department during her academic years at Hindu College from 1991 to 1994. We are incredibly proud of her success and her rise to such a significant leadership role.” Srivastava underscored the role of the college in fostering leadership skills through its unique student-led parliamentary system, which enables students to elect a prime minister and a leader of the opposition each year.
“This system broadens students’ horizons and helps cultivate the leaders of tomorrow,” she added, highlighting Amarasuriya as a shining example of how such experiences can inspire and empower students to effect meaningful change in society.
As Sri Lanka’s new Prime Minister, Amarasuriya follows in the footsteps of notable predecessors, including Sirimavo Bandaranaike and Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. Her entry into Parliament through the NPP national list in 2020 marked her first significant step in a political career that has now culminated in this historic appointment.
The college community is confident that Amarasuriya’s leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment to public service will serve as a guiding force for Sri Lanka, leading the nation towards greater progress and prosperity in the challenging times ahead.
