As the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections draw near, the political atmosphere in the state is becoming increasingly intense. The Election Commission’s recent decision to halt ongoing government recruitment processes has added fuel to the fire. This move, made after the announcement of the elections, is largely attributed to the Congress party’s ‘Bharti Roko Gang’ (Stop Recruitment Gang), which has been actively opposing the current recruitment practices.
Government Jobs Over the Past Decade
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has governed Haryana for the past decade and is aiming for a third consecutive term in the upcoming elections. Since coming to power in 2014, the BJP has successfully provided government jobs to around 150,000 unemployed individuals across the state, bolstering its reputation as a champion of employment opportunities.
Transparency in Recruitment
A key focus of the BJP’s governance has been promoting transparency in the recruitment process. The party’s slogan of ‘no slips, no bribery’ underscores a shift towards merit-based hiring, eliminating the influence of recommendations or bribes in securing government positions. Congress Hinders Recruitment Processes
Despite the BJP’s efforts to streamline hiring, the Congress party has managed to halt several recruitment processes, impacting key sectors:
– 5,600 positions in Haryana Police
– Teaching and physical education roles through the Haryana Staff Selection Commission
– Various posts in the Haryana Public Service Commission
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh raised concerns over potential violations of the electoral code, prompting a formal complaint to the Election Commission. However, after review, the Commission found that these recruitment activities had begun before the election was announced, making them compliant with existing guidelines. Nevertheless, the Commission advised that results for these recruitments should not be declared until after the elections.
Further Delays and Protests
The actions of the ‘Bharti Roko Gang’ have resulted in nearly 24,000 pending government job results in Haryana. The Haryana Staff Selection Commission has indicated that results for approximately 1,500 first and second-category posts, 16,500 group 56 and 57 posts, and 6,000 police recruitment positions are ready to be announced, pending approval.
The Commission’s chairman has also noted that around 5,000 to 7,000 recruitment results could be finalized before the election, with the results for 6,000 constable positions already prepared. These delays have caused significant frustration among Haryana’s youth, leading to protests against Congress’s interference in the recruitment processes. Demonstrations outside the residence of former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda have resulted in clashes with the police, further highlighting the discontent among unemployed youth in the state.
