Over the past decade, the state of Haryana has undergone significant transformations under the leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Among the many changes and developments witnessed, one of the most notable has been in the realm of government employment.
Previously, Haryana was known for the widespread belief that securing a government job without “parchi-kharchi” (recommendation or bribery) was nearly impossible. It was commonly said that government jobs were reserved for those with influential connections or those willing to pay substantial bribes under the table.
End of the “Parchi-Kharchi” Era in Haryana
However, this system has seen a radical shift over the last ten years. When the BJP government came into power in October 2014, it took upon itself the task of making the recruitment process transparent. The stain of corruption that marred government hiring practices in Haryana was addressed head-on, and the government began restoring public trust by ensuring that jobs were awarded solely based on merit.
1.40 Lakh Government Jobs Granted, 50,000 More in the Pipeline
As a result, during the BJP’s two terms in office, approximately 1.40 lakh young individuals have secured government jobs in Haryana purely on the basis of their qualifications. This new merit-based approach means that recommendations and bribes have no place in the hiring process.
As the Haryana Assembly elections approach, the current government is also overseeing the recruitment process for over 50,000 additional government positions.
Doubling the Employment Opportunities in a Decade
When comparing the statistics before the BJP came into power, the difference is stark. In the decade prior, only around 85,000 government positions were filled. The BJP government has more than doubled this figure in the last decade, providing government employment to significantly more qualified individuals.
Continuing the Merit-Based Recruitment Process
Just last month, the state government distributed appointment letters to 7,441 newly recruited TGT teachers, with selection based solely on merit. In 2024 alone, more than 33,000 positions were filled by July without any parchi-kharchi.
This shift has been particularly impactful for the state’s poorest communities. In a state where it was once said that only those who could pay under-the-table bribes could secure a government job, the current reality is that even the poorest individuals are now able to obtain government employment.
The era of middlemen and brokers is over. In Group C and D job categories, young people are being hired without any parchi-kharchi. As many have remarked, “Those who worked hard to secure a government job have been rewarded for their efforts under this government.” The merit-based system has put an end to the corrupt practices of the past.
Non-Stop Recruitment Process Continues in Haryana
Under Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, the recruitment process has improved further, focusing on transparency and fairness. The Chief Minister personally oversees the hiring process under the Haryana Skill Employment Corporation, ensuring that approximately 7,000 qualified candidates receive job offers via SMS.
In addition to new hires, the Haryana Cabinet has also approved the regularization of services for 1,20,000 contract employees across various departments. These employees will now enjoy the same benefits as permanent government employees.
This stands in stark contrast to the past when, in 2013, the then-state government outsourced teacher recruitment to a private company, sparking widespread protests.
A Bright Future for Haryana’s Youth
Today, Haryana’s youth face a future full of opportunities. Those who are qualified no longer need to worry about corruption in the hiring process. They know that the current government operates transparently, ensuring that their futures are secure.
Accusations that government jobs were once distributed by legislators are now a thing of the past. With jobs now being awarded based on merit, young people’s trust in the system has grown. Corruption, nepotism, and regional favouritism have been curbed. Young people no longer need to seek recommendations for employment.
Under this government, even the children of the poorest families are securing jobs without any parchi-kharchi. In the past, the idea of securing a government job would have been unthinkable for these families. Today, however, stories of rickshaw drivers’ sons becoming officers are becoming common.
The transformation in Haryana’s government job recruitment process over the past decade has been profound. By rooting out corruption and focusing on merit-based hiring, the BJP government has not only increased employment opportunities but also restored public faith in the system. As the state continues to progress, the future looks bright for Haryana’s youth, who can now compete fairly for the jobs that were once out of their reach.
