In a tense opening match of the ODI series, Pakistan narrowly missed defending a modest total of 203 against Australia, losing by two wickets at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on November 4. Fast bowler Haris Rauf, who played a pivotal role in Pakistan’s bowling attack, expressed disappointment over his team’s inability to defend the low total but praised the collective efforts despite the close defeat. Haris Rauf, who claimed 3/67 in his nine overs, noted that while Pakistan fought hard with the ball, a few lapses in their fielding and untidy moments added to the challenge.
After being sent in to bat first, Pakistan was bowled out for 203 runs in 46.4 overs, struggling to establish momentum against a disciplined Australian bowling attack. However, Pakistan’s bowlers stepped up, delivering a spirited performance and at one stage reducing Australia to 139/6, keeping the game on edge.
Haris Rauf’s spell was instrumental in Pakistan’s comeback. He broke a critical 85-run partnership between Josh Inglis and Steven Smith by dismissing Smith, who scored 44 runs, with a sharp delivery caught at point. Haris Rauf then claimed two quick wickets, removing Marnus Labuschagne (16 off 13) and Glenn Maxwell (0 off 1) in consecutive deliveries, setting Australia back and giving Pakistan a fighting chance.
Reflecting on the game, Haris Rauf acknowledged the team’s hard work but admitted that lapses in discipline contributed to the loss. “We did give away extras, but when you attack, you have to accept that these things happen,” he stated. “We made mistakes and were a bit untidy. Little things make an impact. If you’re a good bowling unit, you can cover the batters falling 20-30 runs short if you tighten up in the field.” Haris Rauf praised his team’s effort, emphasizing that while the game didn’t go their way, they gave their all in terms of energy and commitment.
Shaheen Afridi also contributed to Pakistan’s bowling efforts, dismissing Inglis for 49 with the help of a brilliant catch by Irfan Khan at deep mid-wicket. However, Australian captain Pat Cummins led his team to victory with a resilient knock of 32* off 31 balls, showcasing his composure under pressure and ensuring Australia went 1-0 up in the three-match series.
For Pakistan, the close finish highlighted the importance of fielding discipline and minimizing extras, especially when defending low totals. Haris Rauf’s standout performance and Pakistan’s competitive bowling unit will aim to regroup and address these issues as they prepare for the second ODI, scheduled for November 8, where they hope to level the series and keep their prospects alive.
