Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya faced his first over-rate penalty in the IPL 2024 season after their nail-biting victory over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Mullanpur. Pandya was fined Rs 12 lakh for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct regarding over-rates. Despite a tense encounter where PBKS threatened MI’s total of 192, Pandya received support from senior teammates like former captain Rohit Sharma and pace-bowler Jasprit Bumrah to steer MI to victory.
MI initially dominated proceedings with the ball, reducing PBKS to 14 for 4. However, PBKS’s Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma staged a remarkable recovery, keeping the Kings in contention. At one stage, PBKS needed just 28 runs from 4 overs with Ashutosh Sharma in destructive form. Yet, a pivotal over from Jasprit Bumrah and a crucial wicket from Gerald Coetzee turned the tide in MI’s favor.
The slow-over rate incurred penalties for MI, resulting in fielding restrictions in the final overs. However, Akash Madhwal maintained his cool to secure the win for MI, limiting PBKS to 13 runs in the last over.
Reflecting on the thrilling encounter, Hardik Pandya emphasized the test of character in such games, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the IPL.
Jasprit Bumrah and Gerald Coetzee emerged as the heroes for MI with impressive bowling figures, propelling the former champions to the 7th position in the 10-team points table.
Hardik Pandya’s fine for over-rate violation highlights the challenges faced by MI in their victory against PBKS. Despite the setback, MI managed to secure a crucial win, thanks to notable performances from key players.
