Indian cricket once again found itself at the center of an intense national debate as former spinner Harbhajan Singh publicly criticized the decision-making process surrounding the futures of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in ODI cricket. Harbhajan, one of India’s most successful bowlers and a veteran voice in the sport, expressed his disappointment that two of the country’s greatest modern-day players are being evaluated by individuals who, he suggests, “have not achieved much” in cricket themselves. His remarks came at a time when speculation over the longevity and relevance of both Rohit and Kohli in the ODI format has grown, particularly with the 2027 World Cup approaching and the calendar for one-day internationals shrinking globally. While both senior players have made it clear that they intend to continue competing, questions persist about how selectors and team management will shape India’s ODI future, and Harbhajan’s comments have added new depth to this ongoing discourse.

The two legends, aged 38 and 37 respectively, remain central to India’s ODI framework despite playing only one format. Yet the direction of Indian cricket in the lead-up to international tournaments has become increasingly uncertain due to shifting selection strategies, evolving leadership philosophies, and mixed team performances. Harbhajan’s critique, therefore, highlights not only his support for Rohit and Kohli but also broader concerns about who holds influence within Indian cricket’s decision-making hierarchy. As India navigates both transitional phases in player management and on-field performance challenges—particularly in Test cricket—his comments have reignited conversations about respect for senior players, consistency in selection policies, and long-term planning for international competitions.

Harbhajan Singh Calls Out Decision-Makers and Praises Rohit-Kohli Longevity Amid Selection Uncertainty

Harbhajan Singh did not mince words when addressing the situation surrounding Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Speaking during his engagement at the DP World ILT20 Season 4, he reflected on his own experiences and argued that Indian cricket has seen multiple instances where celebrated players had their futures shaped by individuals lacking significant personal achievements in the sport. According to him, such a trend is not only unfair but damaging to the professional dignity of players who have served the country at the highest level for years. He highlighted that, like many of his teammates from past eras, he too had experienced abrupt decisions influenced by people who, in his view, did not possess the credibility to make such calls.

He emphasized that Kohli and Rohit, despite their age, are performing at exceptional levels. Kohli has recently returned to top form, scoring consecutive centuries in the ongoing South Africa series. Rohit, having regained rhythm, has compiled two fifties and a commanding unbeaten 121 in his last four innings. Both players continue to demonstrate hunger, discipline, and leadership—qualities that Harbhajan insists are invaluable for India’s ODI plans over the next two years. He believes their presence is crucial not only for achieving success in the 2027 World Cup but also for inspiring younger players through example.

Harbhajan articulated that the duo’s mental strength and technical mastery cannot be undervalued, especially in an era where young players often struggle to maintain consistency due to the influence of T20 cricket. He praised both Rohit and Kohli for their ability to adapt, evolve, and remain resilient despite immense pressure and scrutiny. Their professionalism, he noted, represents the highest standards expected from Indian cricketers.

Meanwhile, the team management and selection committee have avoided clear statements about the long-term future of Rohit and Kohli. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar have been non-committal, opting instead to focus on immediate series and squad rotation plans. Their cautious stance has fueled further speculation, especially among fans and former cricketers who believe India must integrate emerging talents without sidelining established icons prematurely.

Harbhajan remains firm in his belief that both senior players will not only survive but excel until the next ODI World Cup. He asserts that their experience and big-match temperament are unparalleled assets that India cannot afford to ignore during a crucial transition phase in the sport. His confidence in their longevity challenges the narrative that aging players must automatically be phased out, instead highlighting the importance of performance-based evaluation rather than age-driven assumptions.

Concerns Over Test Cricket, Pitch Quality and Changing Player Mindsets as Harbhajan Urges Structural Reforms

Harbhajan also turned attention toward India’s recent struggles in Test cricket, particularly at home—a format and venue where the team historically dominated. Since Gautam Gambhir took over as head coach, India has lost five of its last seven home Tests, including a shocking 0–2 defeat to South Africa, their first such home series loss to the Proteas in twenty-five years. Harbhajan believes that the issues plaguing Indian Test cricket extend well beyond player form or strategy, pointing instead to a fundamental problem: the quality of pitches being prepared across the country.

He argued that excessively bowler-friendly pitches—especially those favoring spinners from the first session—have prevented Indian batters from developing the temperament required for long-format cricket. According to him, home pitches should encourage battles of skill and patience, not matches that end within two or three days. Harbhajan stressed that Indian pitches over the past decade have increasingly been designed to engineer quick results rather than nurture balanced cricket. As a result, batsmen are not receiving enough opportunities to build innings, learn how to negotiate difficult spells, and sustain concentration over extended periods.

He pointed to the Guwahati Test, which lasted a full five days, as an example of a track conducive to real Test cricket. However, India’s struggle to adapt on such a wicket, he said, was evidence that players have grown unaccustomed to competing in traditional conditions. Harbhajan further elaborated that the proliferation of T20 formats has reduced the patience levels of modern players, with many preferring aggressive strokes over defensive resilience. This, combined with spin-heavy pitches, has restricted the possibility of producing classic Test performances.

He emphasized that India cannot expect to create world-class strike spinners or technically sound batsmen if the domestic conditions do not challenge them appropriately. Rank turners, he noted, may deliver short-term series victories but fail to prepare players for overseas tours where high-quality pace attacks and bouncy pitches expose technical gaps. He argued that India’s strength abroad in recent years—particularly in England—should give confidence that the team can win matches on competitive surfaces at home as well.

Addressing the wider cricketing landscape, Harbhajan praised the ILT20 and UAE Cricket Board for expanding opportunities across the region. He noted that the inclusion of players from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and other neighboring countries not only grows the sport but also offers emerging talents a chance to learn alongside established international stars. Tournaments like ILT20, he said, enrich the global cricket ecosystem and provide valuable exposure that can help newer teams build strong cricketing cultures.

Throughout his comments, Harbhajan maintained that respect for senior players, improved pitch standards, and a balanced approach to formats are essential for India’s long-term cricket development. His views reflect both a critique and a call for thoughtful reform, shaped by decades of observation and his deep connection to the game.
