Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent actions against terrorism have received clear backing from Guyana, as the country’s Vice-President Bharrat Jagdeo reaffirmed Guyana’s unwavering support for India’s fight against terrorism during a visit by a delegation of Indian Members of Parliament. This visit comes in the wake of the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam and India’s subsequent Operation Sindoor targeting terrorist infrastructure. The delegation’s discussions with Guyanese leaders and the Indian diaspora emphasized solidarity against terrorism and explored deeper economic and cultural ties between the two nations.
Strong Anti-Terrorism Stance and Diplomatic Engagements
Vice-President Bharrat Jagdeo expressed unequivocal support for India’s position, stressing the importance of bringing terrorists to justice. Meeting the Indian parliamentary delegation led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, Jagdeo said, “Guyana stands unequivocally with India,” highlighting a shared commitment to combating terrorism. The delegation, which includes members from multiple political parties, is traveling globally to represent India’s viewpoint and build international understanding following the recent terrorist incidents and military operations.
Shashi Tharoor described the meeting as “excellent,” sharing on social media his strong sympathy and understanding of India’s concerns after the Pahalgam attack by Pakistan-linked terrorists and India’s retaliatory measures. The delegation also met with the Indian diaspora and representatives of spiritual organizations such as the Art of Living, ISKCON, and Brahma Kumaris, who serve as vital cultural and spiritual anchors for the Indian community in Guyana.
Economic Cooperation and Shared Growth Prospects
Beyond security concerns, discussions extended to economic cooperation. Guyana’s remarkable annual economic growth of around 30 percent, driven largely by recent oil and gas discoveries, was a key topic. The delegation explored how India and Guyana can strengthen bilateral ties to support the Caribbean nation’s development trajectory. India’s High Commission in Georgetown highlighted that the MPs elaborated on India’s positions regarding the terrorist attack, Operation Sindoor, and the Indus Water Treaty, reinforcing India’s firm policy of zero tolerance toward terrorism.
Vice-President Jagdeo’s message underscored Guyana’s firm backing of India’s efforts against terrorism, reaffirming the growing partnership between the two countries amid shared concerns and opportunities.
