The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has been at the forefront of fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in India, with its flagship schemes, the Technology Incubation and Development of Entrepreneurs (TIDE) and the recently launched TIDE 2.0, aimed at supporting and nurturing technology startups across the country.
TIDE Scheme: Nurturing Entrepreneurial Spirit
The TIDE scheme, initiated in 2008 and extended till March 2020, has been instrumental in strengthening technology incubation centers in academic institutions. With 27 centers supported under this scheme, startups and entrepreneurs have found a conducive environment to innovate and develop their ideas into viable products.
Budgetary Support for Innovation
Under TIDE, each incubation center receives financial support of up to Rs. 155 lakhs. This funding is crucial for infrastructure enhancement (up to Rs. 30 lakhs) and supporting incubating companies (Rs. 125 lakhs), enabling them to bridge the gap between research and commercialization, thereby promoting indigenous product development.
TIDE 2.0: A Leap Towards Technological Excellence
Building on the success of TIDE, the Ministry launched TIDE 2.0, a revised and extended version of the original scheme. TIDE 2.0 aims to promote tech entrepreneurship through financial and technical support, primarily focusing on startups using emerging technologies such as IoT, AI, Blockchain, and Robotics in areas of societal relevance.
Empowering Innovation Ecosystem
TIDE 2.0 envisions empowering 51 incubators and supporting close to 2000 tech startups over a span of five years. This support includes financial assistance, mentoring, and networking opportunities, creating a robust ecosystem that fosters innovation and creates both financial and social value.
Driving Innovation for a Brighter Future
Both TIDE and TIDE 2.0 are not just about financial assistance, they signify the government’s commitment to driving innovation and entrepreneurship in India. By providing crucial support to startups and incubators, these schemes are expected to fuel economic growth, create employment opportunities, and elevate India’s stature in the global tech arena.
