On Wednesday, Union Minister Anurag Thakur disclosed that the government had increased the subsidy for beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana from ₹200 to ₹300 per LPG cylinder.
Presently, Ujjwala beneficiaries are charged ₹703 for a 14.2-kg cylinder, whereas the market price stands at ₹903. Following the Union Cabinet’s decision, their cost will be reduced to ₹603.
When and why this Yojana was launched?
In a country as vast and diverse as India, access to clean cooking fuel remains a challenge for many households, especially in rural areas. To address this critical issue and improve the lives of millions, the Indian government launched the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) in May 2016.
