Presently, Ujjwala beneficiaries are charged ₹703 for a 14.2-kg cylinder, whereas the market price stands at ₹903. Following the Union Cabinet’s decision, their cost will be reduced to ₹603.

When and why this Yojana was launched?

In a country as vast and diverse as India, access to clean cooking fuel remains a challenge for many households, especially in rural areas. To address this critical issue and improve the lives of millions, the Indian government launched the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) in May 2016. PMUY is a flagship initiative aimed at providing clean and affordable cooking fuel to women from below-poverty-line (BPL) households, empowering them and safeguarding their health and the environment.

Objective: The primary goal of PMUY is to replace traditional and hazardous cooking methods, such as using firewood or cow dung, with clean and sustainable liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) connections. By doing so, the scheme intends to enhance the health and well-being of women and children in impoverished households and reduce indoor air pollution.

Target Audience: PMUY primarily focuses on providing LPG connections to women belonging to BPL families, which ensures that they no longer have to rely on unclean and unhealthy fuels for cooking.

Implementation: The scheme is implemented by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas in collaboration with oil marketing companies like Bharat Petroleum, Indian Oil, and Hindustan Petroleum.

Key Features and Benefits

Free LPG Connection: Under PMUY, eligible beneficiaries are entitled to a free LPG connection. This includes a gas cylinder, regulator, gas stove, and initial safety training.

Subsidized Refills: Beneficiaries receive subsidies on the purchase of LPG cylinders, which makes refills more affordable and sustainable.

Healthier Homes: By switching to LPG, families reduce exposure to indoor air pollution, which is known to cause various respiratory illnesses. This leads to healthier homes and improved well-being.

Empowerment of Women: PMUY places a strong emphasis on women’s empowerment by making them the primary account holders for the LPG connections. This not only gives women financial independence but also recognizes their role in the household.

Environmental Benefits: The use of LPG reduces the consumption of traditional fuels like firewood and cow dung, which has a positive impact on the environment by curbing deforestation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Impact and Success

Since its launch, PMUY has made significant strides in providing clean cooking fuel to millions of households across India. Some of its notable achievements include:

Increased LPG Penetration: PMUY has significantly increased LPG penetration in rural and underserved areas, reaching remote villages and marginalized communities.

Health Benefits: By promoting cleaner cooking methods, PMUY has contributed to a decrease in the incidence of respiratory diseases among women and children in BPL households.

Women Empowerment: The scheme has played a pivotal role in empowering women by giving them control over LPG connections and financial autonomy within their families.

Environmental Gains: PMUY has had a positive impact on the environment by reducing the pressure on forests and mitigating indoor air pollution.

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) has emerged as a transformative initiative in India, addressing the critical issue of clean cooking fuel access. By providing free LPG connections to women from below-poverty-line households, PMUY has not only improved the health and well-being of millions but has also empowered women and contributed to environmental sustainability. As the government continues to expand the reach of this program, PMUY remains a shining example of how targeted policy interventions can create lasting positive change in the lives of citizens.
