The Government of India has officially unveiled the ‘PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana’, a groundbreaking initiative introduced after its initial mention in the Interim Budget by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Prime Minister Modi, taking to X (formerly Twitter), announced the project, which aims to propel the government’s commitment towards achieving ‘net-zero emissions’.
With a substantial allocation of Rs. 75,000 crores, the ‘PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana’ is set to revolutionize the provision of electricity, targeting 1 crore households with the provision of 300 units of free electricity every month. Prime Minister Modi emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “In our unwavering pursuit of sustainable development and public welfare, we are proud to introduce the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. With an investment exceeding Rs. 75,000 crores, this initiative seeks to illuminate 1 crore households by offering up to 300 units of free electricity monthly.”
Delving into the intricacies of the project, the government underscored its commitment to ensuring no financial burden on citizens. “Through substantial subsidies directly deposited into people’s bank accounts and highly concessional bank loans, the Central Government ensures that citizens are not financially strained. Furthermore, a National Online Portal will seamlessly integrate all stakeholders, enhancing accessibility and convenience.”
It is pertinent to note that, in a bid to proliferate the scheme at the grassroots level, Urban Local Bodies and Panchayats will be incentivized to promote rooftop solar systems. The initiative promises not only increased access to electricity but also a slew of ancillary benefits, including augmented income, reduced power bills, and job creation opportunities.
“Let’s embrace solar power and usher in sustainable progress. I urge all residential consumers, particularly the youth, to wholeheartedly support the PM – Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana by applying at- https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in,” added PM Modi.
Significantly, apart from boosting go-green initiatives, the program also encompasses a plethora of benefits, ranging from annual savings of up to Rs. 15,000-18,000 for households to opportunities for selling surplus electricity to discoms, entrepreneurial avenues in EV charging infrastructure, and employment prospects for skilled youth in installation and maintenance.
Moreover, the ‘PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana’ represents a transformative step towards equitable access to electricity and sustainable energy solutions for all.
