In a major operation, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 3 kilograms of gold valued at approximately ₹2.35 crore at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. The gold was ingeniously concealed within the piston cavities of two mini air compressors, showcasing the increasing sophistication of smuggling methods. The interception took place on Wednesday based on specific intelligence inputs, according to an official release.

An Indian national arriving from Bangkok was apprehended in connection with the smuggling attempt. The individual has been arrested under the Customs Act of 1962, and further investigation is underway to uncover possible links to a larger smuggling network.

This operation highlights the continued vigilance and effective strategies employed by the DRI to curb illegal gold trafficking. The release noted that the DRI has been particularly active in Gujarat, with total seizures across Ahmedabad and Surat International Airports exceeding 93 kilograms of gold in 2024 alone. The seized gold is estimated to be worth around ₹66 crore, underscoring the scale of smuggling activities in the region.

Gold smuggling remains a persistent issue in India, driven by high import duties and demand for the precious metal. Smugglers often employ innovative methods to evade detection, as seen in this case. The use of everyday objects like air compressors to conceal contraband demonstrates the lengths to which traffickers go to avoid scrutiny. However, the DRI’s proactive measures and reliance on intelligence-based operations continue to yield significant results.

Officials emphasized the importance of maintaining stringent checks at international airports and the role of advanced surveillance and intelligence-sharing in preventing such activities. The DRI’s commitment to combating smuggling not only ensures compliance with legal regulations but also prevents the illicit trade from undermining the country’s economy.

This latest seizure serves as a reminder of the persistent challenges posed by gold smuggling and the need for continued vigilance. As investigations proceed, authorities aim to dismantle the networks facilitating such illegal activities and enhance security measures to counter evolving smuggling techniques.

The apprehended individual is currently in custody, and further details regarding the smuggling syndicate are expected to emerge as the investigation unfolds. The DRI’s efforts reaffirm its resolve to protect India’s borders from economic offenses and illegal trade.
