World leaders convened at a summit in Switzerland over the weekend to express unified support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity amidst ongoing conflict with Russia. More than 90 states participated in the summit held at the Burgenstock resort, marking a concerted effort to address Europe’s largest conflict since World War II.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the diplomatic success of the summit, despite Russia’s absence, emphasizing the need for further peace negotiations. “Russia and their leadership are not ready for a just peace,” Volodymyr Zelensky stated firmly during the closing news conference.
The summit concluded with a joint communique supported by the majority of attendees, reaffirming the commitment to uphold the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of all states, including Ukraine. It condemned any use of nuclear weapons in the conflict and called for food security issues not to be weaponized.
However, the communique did not receive unanimous support, with notable absences from countries like India, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. India’s delegation, led by Pavan Kapoor, stressed the importance of inclusive dialogue involving all stakeholders to achieve lasting peace.
Swiss President Viola Amherd acknowledged the challenges ahead, describing the road to peace as “long and challenging.” Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov reiterated Russia’s stance, highlighting President Vladimir Putin’s recent call for Ukraine to meet certain conditions as a basis for negotiations.
The summit discussions also touched upon humanitarian concerns, including the return of deported children and the welfare of prisoners of war. Chilean President Gabriel Boric emphasized the summit’s focus on international law and human rights, underscoring their universal applicability beyond Ukraine.
President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana highlighted the global impact of the conflict, particularly on food security and inflation, affecting living standards in many countries worldwide. He called for broader international involvement, including Russia and China, in the peace process to achieve a definitive settlement.
The summit concluded amidst ongoing military developments on the ground, with Russia claiming territorial gains in southern Ukraine. Despite the diplomatic efforts, the situation remains precarious, with both sides maintaining their positions on crucial negotiation points.
The outcome of the summit sets the stage for further diplomatic maneuvers aimed at resolving the conflict through dialogue and adherence to international norms. The international community’s continued engagement will be crucial in shaping the path towards a sustainable peace agreement in Ukraine.
