Glenn Maxwell’s dismal form from the IPL 2024 has carried over into the T20 World Cup, as the all-rounder suffered a first-ball duck in the match against Oman on June 6. Coming in with Australia in a precarious position after losing their skipper Mitchell Marsh, Maxwell’s dismissal added to their woes.
Attempting a cover drive, Maxwell’s promising shot was cut short by a stunning catch from Oman skipper Aqib Ilyas off the bowling of Mehran Khan. This left Australian fans stunned and Maxwell himself distraught.
Maxwell’s struggles in the IPL 2024 season with RCB were evident, with the all-rounder even taking a break from the team due to his poor performance. Scoring just 52 runs in 10 matches, Maxwell’s average was a mere 5.73, marking his worst IPL campaign with the bat.
Coincidentally, Maxwell’s T20 World Cup dismissal mirrored his final match for RCB, where he was also out for a first-ball duck in the Eliminator against RR.
Despite early setbacks, Australia managed to recover, thanks to Marcus Stoinis and David Warner. Stoinis, after a stroke of luck in the first ball, hammered four sixes off Mehran’s final over, propelling Australia’s score to 164 in their 20 overs. Warner’s crucial partnership and score of 56 off 51 balls ensured Oman faced a challenging target.
