Glenn Maxwell, the Australian cricketer representing Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, revealed that he voluntarily requested the team management to omit him from the playing XI for the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 15 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. This decision came amidst a series of changes made by the hosts, including the inclusion of Will Jacks, Lockie Ferguson, and Reece Topley as their overseas players, alongside captain Faf du Plessis. Maxwell cited a decline in his performance, registering only 32 runs from 6 matches at an average of 5.33 and a strike rate of 94.11.
Acknowledging his lackluster form, Maxwell admitted to approaching du Plessis and the coaching staff after the previous game, expressing his belief that it was time to explore alternative options in the middle order. The cricketer emphasized the importance of taking a mental and physical break to avoid exacerbating his current situation.
Glenn Maxwell stated, “For me, personally, it was a pretty easy decision. I went to Faf [du Plessis] and the coaches after the last game and said I felt it was probably time we tried someone else.” He highlighted the need to avoid repeating past mistakes and to prioritize his well-being to ensure a potential return to form later in the tournament.
Reflecting on his performance, Glenn Maxwell acknowledged his disappointment in not contributing positively to the team’s batting lineup, particularly in the crucial phase after the powerplay overs. He expressed hope that his absence would provide an opportunity for another player to step up and make a meaningful impact for the team.
Despite the changes made by RCB in the match against SRH, the team was unable to secure a victory, succumbing to a 25-run defeat while chasing a challenging target of 288 runs. With six losses from seven matches, RCB finds itself at the bottom of the IPL 2024 points table with just 2 points and a net run rate of -1.185.
