Indian badminton players Aakarshi Kashyap and Sathish Kumar Karunakaran showcased their prowess at the German Open 2024 in Mulheim, advancing to the second round in women’s and men’s singles categories, respectively.
Kashyap, ranked 43rd in the world, displayed her resilience by defeating Ukraine’s Polina Buhrova, ranked 79th, in a thrilling encounter with a score of 23-21, 17-21, 11-21. She now progresses to the round of 16, where she will face Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt, ranked 22nd. While, Karunakaran, ranked 50th globally, defeated Israel’s Misha Zilberman, ranked 45th, in a closely contested match with a score of 21-18, 19-21, 21-19. He advances to face Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen, ranked 42nd, in the next round.
Meanwhile, in other categories, Indian faced tough challenges. India’s Sankar Subramanian, ranked 69th, faced disappointment with a first-round exit after a hard-fought match against Canada’s Brian Yang, ranked 22nd.
In duo-round too, the Players have had to go through difficult phase. Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh were defeated in mixed doubles by Malaysian pair Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Jemie Lai. Rutaparna and Swetaparna Panda also suffered a loss in women’s doubles against a German pair.
Tanya Hemanth, ranked 75th, was ousted in women’s singles after facing a defeat against Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon, ranked 12th.
Similarly, Sathish Kumar Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath faced defeat in mixed doubles against the third-seeded pair from Hong Kong China.
It is pertinent to note that the German Open 2024, a BWF Super 300 meet, holds significance as it offers qualifying ranking points for the Paris 2024 Olympics. With the qualification window for badminton ongoing, Indian shuttlers aim to capitalize on opportunities to secure their spots in the prestigious event.
