In a resolute stand against racial discrimination, the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC) reiterated its unwavering commitment to combating all forms of racial injustice. The affirmation came during the commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, held within the 55th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
Representing the GCC, which is presently chaired by the State of Qatar, Jawhara bint Abdulaziz Al Suwaidi, the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar in Geneva, delivered a powerful statement underscoring the detrimental impact of racial discrimination on societies. Al Suwaidi emphasized that such discrimination not only infringes upon individuals’ rights but also undermines public health and hinders societal progress.
Expressing deep concern over the proliferation of racial discrimination worldwide, particularly against people of African descent, the GCC condemned the alarming prevalence of hate crimes, harassment, and racial profiling perpetrated by law enforcement agencies. Instances of discrimination in various spheres such as employment, housing, and education were also highlighted, with the GCC noting the adverse consequences, including early school dropout rates.
The statement shed light on the robust legal framework within GCC countries aimed at combating racial discrimination. Reference was made to the GCC Human Rights Declaration of 2014, which unequivocally asserts equality among individuals, irrespective of their origin, gender, religion, language, or any other distinguishing factor.
In addition to addressing internal measures, the GCC statement drew attention to the plight of the Palestinian people enduring apartheid policies under Israeli occupation. The GCC called upon the international community to urgently intervene and put an end to the systemic violations and injustices faced by the Palestinian population.
