A Ganpati idol decoration at a household in Kalina, Mumbai, has drawn significant attention for its theme addressing violence against women. The decoration, part of the ongoing 10-day Ganpati festival, highlights the recent brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, which has sparked national outrage.
The incident has led to widespread protests, with doctors going on strike in several states and citizens’ groups holding daily demonstrations demanding justice for the victim.
“The horror of the Kolkata incident and other similar events across the country have raised serious concerns about the safety of women. This inspired me to choose this theme for the Ganpati festival decoration this year,” said Shubham Vanmala, 28.
Vanmala, a security in-charge at a private airline, spent 15 days creating the display. It features posters on crimes against women, along with cardboard models of the Supreme Court, RG Kar Medical College, the West Bengal Assembly, and a statue of the Lady of Justice. Vanmala has been creating festival decorations based on current affairs since 2018, with past themes including the 9/11 attack and hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Although he has no formal training in art, Vanmala says his passion for current events drives his creative work. “I hope Lord Ganesh brings justice and severe punishment to the accused in the Kolkata case,” he added.
The unique display has attracted a steady stream of visitors to Vanmala’s residence, many of whom have expressed appreciation for the thoughtful and timely theme.
The Ganpati festival, which began on September 7, will conclude on September 17.
