The Kerala unit of the Congress party has voiced criticism regarding the high fares and low occupancy rates observed on Vande Bharat trains, citing data from the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). According to their analysis, over 50 per cent of these trains are operating with significant numbers of empty seats.
Expressing their discontent, the Congress Kerala took to social media to highlight the issue, pointing out the disparity between the high ticket prices and the underwhelming booking numbers for Vande Bharat trains. They underscored that despite the holiday season prompting increased travel among families, bookings for these trains remain surprisingly low.
The party’s concerns extended to economic disparities, noting that affluent regions demonstrate a higher ability to afford Vande Bharat tickets, while economically disadvantaged areas struggle to access these costly services. A video shared by the Kerala unit also showcased instances of waiting lists on other trains, juxtaposed with many unoccupied seats on Vande Bharat trains.
Comparing the fare of Vande Bharat trains to more affordable options like Garib Rath, the Congress highlighted the prohibitive cost difference, raising questions about the viability of Vande Bharat for the average commuter. They emphasized the need for Indian Railways to cater to diverse passenger demographics and criticized what they perceived as an excessive focus on Vande Bharat trains.
In March, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 10 Vande Bharat trains on different routes. However, concerns raised by the Opposition, including the potential discontinuation of facilities like free ration schemes and Vande Bharat trains if they were to come to power, were addressed by PM Modi during an election rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur on May 5.
