In a daring daytime heist, a group of armed men raided a jewellery store in Asansol’s Raniganj district on Sunday, triggering a shootout with the police. The incident resulted in one suspect being injured and a significant amount of jewellery stolen.
CCTV footage captured the brazen robbery, where eight individuals, reportedly aged between 22 and 25, stormed the store. They overwhelmed the security guard, seized his firearm, and brandished their own weapons before looting the establishment. Customers and staff were held hostage at gunpoint during the ordeal.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) reported that swift action from nearby police units led to a confrontation with the robbers. Despite managing to flee on motorcycles with a considerable amount of stolen jewellery, the gang left behind a bag of additional loot in their haste.
IC Sripur and patrolling units responded promptly, engaging in a shootout with the suspects. One suspect sustained injuries during the exchange, while another was captured with the assistance of Giridih police in Jharkhand. Authorities are currently searching for the remaining members of the gang.
The exact value of the stolen goods is yet to be determined, pending a detailed inventory from the jewellery store. However, police have recovered the abandoned firearm of the security guard near the crime scene. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, with intensified patrols and scrutiny of CCTV footage in the area to identify the remaining suspects.
