Assam Member of Parliament Sarbananda Sonowal, known for his journey from student activism to ministerial roles, has been inducted into the Narendra Modi-led cabinet for the third time.
Sarbananda Sonowal, a prominent leader in Assam’s political landscape, first served as Minister of State for Sports & Youth Welfare in 2014. His tenure was marked by significant contributions to the development of sports and youth welfare initiatives.
Transitioning from state to central politics, Sarbananda Sonowal later assumed office as Assam’s chief minister after BJP’s historic victory in 2016. Subsequently, he joined the Modi 2.0 cabinet in 2021, overseeing crucial portfolios like Shipping, Waterways, Port, and Ayush.
His political trajectory reflects a commitment to grassroots activism and community unification, evident in his efforts to bridge divides between diverse indigenous populations in Assam.
However, challenges emerged during his tenure, notably amidst protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Critics accused him of compromising the interests of indigenous communities, a stark departure from his previous role as a champion for their rights.
Sarbananda Sonowal’s political journey traces back to his early days as a student leader in the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and later as a member of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). His transition to the BJP marked a pivotal moment in Assam’s political landscape, with Sonowal credited for expanding the party’s presence in the state.
Born in Dibrugarh district, Sarbananda Sonowal’s dedication to public service and Assamese culture remains unwavering, making him a significant figure in both state and national politics.
As he embarks on this new chapter in Modi 3.0, Sarbananda Sonowal’s leadership and experience are poised to play a crucial role in shaping policies and initiatives for the benefit of the nation.
