On Thursday (October 26), a court in Qatar pronounced a death sentence for eight former Indian Navy personnel. These ex-navy officers had been in custody for over a year, with Qatar’s intelligence service detaining them along with eight others last August. At that time, they were working for a private firm. News of relief for India has surfaced as the Qatari court has accepted the plea of the eight former Indian Navy officers. A hearing on their appeal could be conducted soon.
The manner in which the death sentence was handed down to Indian Navy officers in a Qatari court had raised questions from the outset. Therefore, there was an expectation of a solid diplomatic or strategic move from India in response. Any country has the right to determine its course of action regarding legal proceedings against its citizens in another country. Regarding the eight Indian naval personnel who received the death penalty, there is no clear picture of the charges against them. If the legal system in Qatar has applied its checks and balances, it remains to be seen if there are any alternatives to the death penalty.
The officers sentenced were working for a private naval company in Qatar. It is surprising that Qatar kept this matter confidential in the initial days. Although reports related to this case suggested that the arrested officers were involved in espionage for Israel in the framework of the Qatar Submarine Project, the lack of transparency raised questions about its fairness.
Speaking about India’s stance, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated, “We are extremely concerned about the decision to pronounce the death penalty, and we are awaiting detailed notes on the judgment. We are in touch with the families and legal teams. We will continue to provide all necessary political and legal assistance. We will present our case to Qatari authorities. In such cases, parallel international diplomatic considerations also come into play. If the Qatari court reviews this case and shows leniency towards the officers in terms of the death penalty, it will carry its significance. Otherwise, India still has the option to present its side in international courts.
