  • 13-year-old Iniya Pragati embarks on ambitious space exploration journey.
  • Arctic research mission inspires her goal to reach Moon, Mars.

At just 13 years old, Iniya Pragati from Chennai is already rewriting the narrative of what young dreamers in India can achieve. Her journey began not in a laboratory or a classroom, but under the quiet canopy of the night sky, where she first discovered a fascination for the cosmos at the tender age of five. This early curiosity about the stars, planets, and celestial wonders has propelled her into extraordinary achievements rarely seen in someone so young. From completing a high Arctic research mission on Devon Island—an area whose geology closely resembles that of Mars—to becoming India’s youngest analogue astronaut, Iniya’s sights are now firmly set on the Moon, Mars, and the broader horizons of space exploration. Her story is one of determination, resilience, and a commitment to inspire others to pursue STEM education and sustainable planetary exploration.

Arctic Expedition and Scientific Achievements

Iniya’s most recent achievement, her Arctic expedition, was a high-altitude research mission supported by the Mars Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring young people to pursue space exploration. The mission took her to Devon Island, a remote area in the high Arctic whose Haughton Crater, a 14-million-year-old impact site, mirrors Mars’ geology. As part of this expedition, Iniya and her team became the first to venture into the center of the crater, collecting water samples, searching for microbial life, and investigating the presence of microplastics in these untouched regions. “It was mostly like a space expedition,” she explained, describing the intense fieldwork that involved careful data collection, sample preservation, and ongoing analysis. Her research not only examines extraterrestrial analogues but also addresses pressing environmental concerns, reflecting the dual role of scientific exploration and planetary stewardship.

Iniya’s achievements extend beyond fieldwork. She is a published author of three books, including Evidence of Water on Mars, a work that demonstrates her commitment to rigorous study and public engagement. Writing her books has enhanced her reading and comprehension skills, allowing her to immerse herself in every possible aspect of Martian science. “Writing a book made me a good reader,” she said. “I started working for extended hours almost every day to read and understand Mars in every possible aspect.” Her dedication to both scientific research and communication underscores a rare combination of intellectual curiosity and public-mindedness.

Her Arctic mission also included training in astronaut-like conditions, combining scientific observation with physical preparation. Iniya has undertaken rigorous training in rocket design, propulsion, and space architecture, alongside advanced scuba diving to simulate the conditions of zero gravity. “I started researching how to become an astronaut and discovered that astronauts train in the Neutral Buoyancy Lab at NASA,” she explained. By emulating these techniques through breath-holding underwater and scuba training, she has prepared herself for the physical demands of space travel. This multifaceted preparation demonstrates not only her commitment but also an understanding of the complex interdisciplinary nature of astronaut training.

Dreams Beyond the Arctic: Moon, Mars, and Inspiring Generations

Iniya’s aspirations extend far beyond the Arctic. She has publicly stated her intention to travel first to low Earth orbit, then to the Moon, and eventually to Mars, articulating a stepwise approach to space exploration. “I’ll be on the Moon,” she said with quiet confidence. “Sooner than later, and then on to Mars. My final destination is Mars. But first I want to go to Low Earth Orbit, then Moon.” These ambitions have been matched by concrete plans, including her acceptance into NASA’s 10-day space training program in 2026, which will make her the youngest Indian to participate in such a program. Iniya is actively seeking sponsorships for her journey, demonstrating both initiative and an understanding of the practicalities involved in pursuing a career in space exploration.

In addition to her personal achievements, Iniya serves as a Mars Ambassador, actively promoting STEM education, space sustainability, and the importance of dreaming big. She uses this platform to educate and inspire the younger generation, emphasizing the global responsibility of nurturing scientific curiosity and sustainable living. “Being the Mars Ambassador is the best way to communicate the importance of this significant endeavour to our younger generation,” she said. Her advocacy work complements her scientific pursuits, highlighting a rare combination of intellectual achievement and social responsibility.

Her dedication to societal causes extends further into the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Iniya focuses particularly on quality education for girls and water conservation, linking her passion for space with broader environmental and social goals. “My inquisitiveness towards space has turned me into an author and a researcher,” she said. “I want to create a habitat on Mars – my home.” Her vision blends futuristic exploration with an ethical commitment to sustainable planetary management, reflecting a maturity beyond her years.

Iniya’s journey has been supported by her parents, whom she credits as her “super supporters,” offering guidance, encouragement, and practical help. While her school, SRM Public School in Chennai, supports her in spirit, she emphasizes the largely self-driven nature of her pursuits. She has actively participated in major events such as the Confederation of Indian Industry space meeting in Bengaluru, further integrating herself into the national and international space community.

Her engagement with India’s space legends has reinforced her resolve. Iniya has met Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, India’s first astronaut, who encouraged her to remain consistent and never abandon her dreams. She also had the opportunity to interact with Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who visited the International Space Station. These encounters serve as both inspiration and mentorship, helping her navigate the pathway from dream to achievement.

Iniya’s story aligns with India’s larger ambitions in space exploration. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi announcing plans to send 40 to 50 Indian astronauts into space and envisioning an Indian walking on the Moon by 2040, her generation is uniquely positioned to participate in historic milestones. Iniya expresses readiness to contribute to this vision: “Of course, why not?” she said. “I will be going to space in India. Indian space programme.” Her proactive preparation, global exposure, and relentless pursuit of knowledge position her as a potential trailblazer for India’s space ambitions.

Iniya Pragati’s story is a compelling testament to what determination, curiosity, and structured ambition can achieve, even at a very young age. From Arctic ice to Martian dreams, she represents a new generation of Indian youth aspiring to transcend conventional boundaries and redefine the possibilities of space exploration. Her achievements underscore the importance of nurturing curiosity from a young age, integrating scientific inquiry with practical experience, and inspiring others to dream without limits. Iniya’s journey reflects a blend of scientific rigor, creative thinking, and ethical responsibility—a model for future explorers and a source of inspiration for young dreamers across the world.

Her Arctic research, literary contributions, and advocacy work collectively demonstrate that space exploration is not merely a professional goal but a holistic pursuit encompassing education, environmental stewardship, and public engagement. Iniya’s example illustrates that a combination of fieldwork, rigorous study, and global networking can prepare one not only for technical challenges in space but also for leadership roles in shaping the future of planetary exploration.

Through her dedication to Mars, the Moon, and ultimately, the wider cosmos, Iniya Pragati embodies the spirit of curiosity, resilience, and ambition. Her narrative conveys the message that age is no barrier to extraordinary achievement, and that dreams, when pursued with discipline and passion, can take a young mind from the quiet wonder of the night sky to the forefront of global space exploration.

Her journey continues to inspire countless students in India and beyond, showing that with vision, hard work, and unwavering determination, even the seemingly impossible can be within reach. Iniya’s ongoing commitment to research, education, and advocacy not only prepares her for the challenges of space but also equips her to influence and mentor future generations, ensuring that the legacy of curiosity and exploration continues.

From her earliest stargazing experiences to becoming a published author, Arctic researcher, and NASA trainee, Iniya Pragati exemplifies the power of youthful ambition, careful planning, and a steadfast commitment to turning dreams into reality. Her story is both a celebration of personal achievement and a blueprint for inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, and explorers in India and around the world.
