Around 2,000 Indian sailors remain stranded in the Persian Gulf as rising tensions between Iran, the US and Israel halt ship movement, leaving thousands of seafarers anxious.

A growing maritime crisis has emerged in the Persian Gulf as nearly 20,000 sailors from different countries, including around 2,000 Indians, remain stranded amid escalating tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, United States, and Israel. The crisis has intensified after Iran began targeting or threatening ships believed to have links with the United States or Israel. According to reports from seafarers currently stationed in the region, hundreds of vessels are stuck at sea as shipping movement has largely halted due to security concerns. The situation has created panic among sailors who fear that any vessel could become a target if it attempts to move. One of the sailors affected by the crisis is Raman Kapoor, a ship captain from Kullu District in Himachal Pradesh, who shared a video describing the dangerous conditions in the region. In the video message, Kapoor explained that thousands of sailors remain stuck aboard ships with no clear timeline for when they will be able to leave the area.

Hundreds of Ships Stuck as Maritime Routes Shut

Captain Raman Kapoor stated that around 500 to 700 ships are currently stranded in the Persian Gulf because of the conflict. Due to heightened military tension and security alerts, ships are not being allowed to move forward through key maritime routes. According to him, shipping companies and authorities have halted movement to avoid the risk of attacks on commercial vessels. Kapoor explained that the situation at sea is extremely tense because ships with any suspected links to the United States or Israel are considered potential targets. He said that sailors fear that even routine movements of vessels could attract military action. As a result, ships are forced to remain stationary in the same area while awaiting further instructions. The uncertainty has created significant stress for crew members who remain onboard for extended periods without knowing when they will be able to leave. Many sailors are maintaining constant contact with their families back home while monitoring the rapidly changing situation in the Gulf.

Indian Captain Describes Situation as “Living in Fear”

In his video message, Captain Raman Kapoor described the atmosphere in the Persian Gulf as one filled with anxiety and uncertainty. He said his own ship is currently stuck in the region after recently loading cargo from Iraq. According to him, the crew cannot move forward due to security restrictions, but they also cannot safely return because of the conflict conditions. The captain explained that the crew members have no option but to remain on high alert at all times while waiting for further instructions from authorities and shipping companies. Kapoor also said that both air routes and sea routes in the region have been affected by the conflict, making evacuation or relocation extremely difficult. He described the situation as one where sailors feel trapped between uncertainty and danger, with the possibility of attacks creating constant psychological pressure.

Iran Restricts Movement of Oil Tankers

According to reports shared by sailors in the region, Iran is attempting to control the movement of oil tankers passing through the Persian Gulf. Captain Kapoor stated that Iranian authorities appear to be discouraging or preventing oil tankers from leaving the Gulf to deliver supplies to countries linked with the United States or Israel. However, ships transporting oil to countries such as India and China are believed to be facing fewer restrictions. The Persian Gulf is one of the most important energy transport routes in the world. Any disruption in shipping traffic through the region can have major consequences for global oil markets and energy security. With hundreds of ships currently unable to move, the crisis has raised concerns about the stability of international shipping routes and the safety of commercial vessels operating in the region.

Sailors Appeal to Government for Help

Captain Raman Kapoor has appealed to the Government of India to take urgent steps to ensure the safety of Indian sailors stranded in the Persian Gulf. In his message, he asked people across the country to pray for the safety of the thousands of seafarers currently stuck in the conflict zone. Kapoor also said that his company and fellow crew members are supporting each other during the crisis, but the uncertainty remains extremely stressful. Sailors aboard stranded vessels are hoping that diplomatic efforts or military arrangements will soon allow safe passage for ships currently trapped in the region. Many seafarers are worried about how long the situation will continue and whether evacuation or safe escort missions may be needed.

War in the Region Entering Third Week

The current crisis is linked to the ongoing conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran, which reportedly began on February 28. The confrontation has now entered its third week with no clear signs of de-escalation. The war has already affected international shipping, aviation routes and energy markets. As tensions continue to rise, maritime security in the Persian Gulf remains one of the most critical concerns. Analysts warn that prolonged disruptions in the region could lead to higher global energy prices and supply shortages. For the thousands of sailors currently stranded at sea, however, the immediate concern remains their safety and the hope that the conflict will end soon so they can return home.
