Former US President Donald Trump’s comments were made during a panel discussion, where he expressed confusion over Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity. “She was always of Indian heritage and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was Black, until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black,” former US President Donald Trump said. He further questioned whether Vice President Kamala Harris identifies as Indian or Black, despite Vice President Kamala Harris’s own statements about her dual heritage.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who is of Indian and Jamaican descent, has consistently identified herself as both Black and Asian. She is the first Black and Asian-American to serve as Vice President of the United States. Since launching her presidential campaign in late July, Vice President Kamala Harris has faced numerous racist and sexist attacks, with some far-right commentators questioning her racial identity. Vice President Kamala Harris described former US President Donald Trump’s remarks as “the same old show of divisiveness and disrespect.”

The former President’s remarks are part of a broader strategy to court Black voters, a crucial demographic that heavily supported President Joe Biden in the 2020 election. Biden secured 92% of the Black vote compared to former US President Donald Trump’s 8%, according to Pew Research. However, recent polls show that Vice President Kamala Harris is narrowly leading former US President Donald Trump, with a Reuters/Ipsos poll indicating she holds a slight edge at 43% compared to former US President Donald Trump’s 42%.
As Vice President Kamala Harris continues her campaign, her candidacy has sparked renewed enthusiasm among Black voters and others, even as she faces a challenging and contentious political landscape.
