Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu has shared his views on the leadership scenario in the Indian Test team ahead of the upcoming England tour, suggesting that Jasprit Bumrah is the ideal candidate to captain the side. He also emphasized that if Shubman Gill is chosen as the Test captain following Rohit Sharma’s retirement, the youngster should open the batting rather than be placed in Virat Kohli’s traditional No.4 slot. Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about India’s leadership and batting order in the longest format of the game.

Bumrah as the Preferred Leader
With Rohit Sharma’s retirement creating a leadership void in the Test team, the search for a new captain has intensified. Jasprit Bumrah, who led India during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Rohit’s absence, has emerged as a strong contender. Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu believes Bumrah’s leadership qualities, combined with his commitment and ability to inspire teammates, make him the right choice for the captaincy role. He highlighted the importance of having a leader who commands respect and leads by example, especially in challenging overseas conditions. Despite concerns about Bumrah’s workload—he reportedly informed BCCI that he can play only three Tests on a tour—Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu remains confident that Bumrah’s passion and energy will benefit the team.

Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu praised the unity within the team and stressed that a captain must instill belief and acceptance among players. He recalled the previous leadership challenges with Hardik Pandya’s entry and contrasted it with the current positive team environment, suggesting Bumrah is the man to unite the squad.

Gill’s Role and Batting Position
Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu also expressed clear opinions on Shubman Gill’s batting role if he is appointed captain. Contrary to the idea of placing Gill at No.4, Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu advised that Gill should be promoted to open or bat at No.3. He argued that protecting Gill by placing him at Kohli’s old position sends the wrong message and undermines his potential as a strong leader. Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu insisted that a captain should not need any “protective shield” and must face challenges head-on.

Furthermore, Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu suggested that KL Rahul is better suited for the No.4 spot and also advocated for the inclusion of Shreyas Iyer in the Test side. He questioned the utility of keeping Karun Nair in the mix and recommended fresh options to strengthen the batting lineup.

Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu’s candid views add to the ongoing debate about the future leadership and batting order of the Indian Test team as selectors prepare to announce the squad for the critical England tour.
