Vijay Shanker, the former director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), passed away on the morning of December 3, 2024, at Yatharth Hospital in Greater Noida, after battling a prolonged illness. He was 75 years old. A close family member confirmed the news of his demise, sharing a heartfelt message about the loss.
The family member’s statement read, “It is with a lot of pain and sadness that we wish to inform you about the demise of our husband/father, Shri Vijay Shanker, Former Director CBI on 03 December 2024.” The message further mentioned that VijayShanker had been undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer, which had reached its advanced, stage 4 stage. Despite the challenges of his illness, his family remained by his side during his final days.
Vijay Shanker had a distinguished career in the Indian Police Service (IPS), having joined the force in 1969. He is best remembered for his tenure as the director of the CBI, where he served from December 2005 to July 2008. Under his leadership, the agency tackled several high-profile cases and earned recognition for its investigative work. VijayShanker’s leadership at the helm of the CBI was marked by a commitment to transparency and diligence, which further strengthened the reputation of India’s premier law enforcement agency.
In keeping with his wishes, his family announced that his remains would be donated to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for medical research, a final act of generosity that reflected his lifelong dedication to public service.
