An FIR has been registered against Congress Member of Parliament and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, in Odisha’s Jharsuguda police station. The complaint, filed under sections 152 and 197(1)(D) of the Indian Penal Code, accuses Rahul Gandhi of making “deliberate anti-national statements” that allegedly hurt the sentiments of every Indian citizen. The case has sparked political tensions, with the police launching an investigation into the matter.
According to the FIR, the complaint was filed on February 7 at 11:30 PM by 42-year-old Ram Hari Pujari, a resident of Sarbahal in Odisha. The complaint was backed by members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), BJP Yuva Morcha, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Bajrang Dal, and the legal cell of BJP’s Jharsuguda district unit. The complainants have alleged that Rahul Gandhi has been consistently making statements that are not only against the interests of the nation but also hurt the sentiments of Indian citizens.
The FIR claims that Rahul Gandhi’s remarks have crossed the boundaries of freedom of speech and have incited subversive activities and rebellion among people. It further states that his statements pose a threat to India’s sovereignty and integrity. Following the complaint, the police have initiated an investigation into the matter.
The controversy stems from a speech made by Rahul Gandhi on January 15 during the inauguration of the Congress Party’s new headquarters on Kotla Road in Delhi. During his address, Gandhi made strong remarks against the ideology of the RSS, stating that just as the RSS’s ideology has existed for thousands of years, so has that of the Congress, which has been fighting against it for an equally long period.
In his speech, Rahul Gandhi asserted that the battle against the RSS and BJP is not a fair fight and that it would be incorrect to assume they were merely confronting a political organization. He alleged that the BJP and RSS have taken control of every institution in the country and declared that the fight is now against not just the BJP and RSS but also the “Indian state.” These remarks have ignited a major political debate, with BJP-affiliated groups viewing them as a direct challenge to the nation’s sovereignty.
The FIR against Rahul Gandhi has further intensified political tensions between the ruling BJP and the Congress party, raising questions about the limits of political discourse and the interpretation of dissent in a democracy. With the police now actively investigating the case, it remains to be seen how the legal proceedings will unfold in the coming days.
