In the FIFA World Cup 2026 AFC qualifiers, the Indian men’s football team bid adieu to Sunil Chhetri’s illustrious career with a thrilling goalless draw against Kuwait at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium on Thursday.
The match, marked by a pulsating atmosphere, saw both teams vying for possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities. However, neither side managed to break the deadlock.
Sunil Chhetri, who made his debut 19 years ago by scoring against Pakistan, ended his international journey as the fourth-highest goal-scorer in history, tallying 94 goals in 151 matches. The stadium echoed chants of “Chhetri, Chhetri,” reflecting the sentiment of fans bidding farewell to a legend.
Despite Kuwait displaying composure, with Mohammad Abdulah Daham leading their attack, Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu thwarted their efforts. India gradually found their rhythm, with Liston Colaco and Anwar Ali coming close to scoring but narrowly missing the mark.
The second half witnessed renewed vigor from both teams, with India’s Rahim Ali and Brandon Fernandes injecting fresh energy into the attack. However, Kuwait’s defense remained resolute, denying India a breakthrough.
Following the draw, India stands second in Group A with five points from as many matches. Qatar leads the table with 12 points, having already secured a berth in the next round. Kuwait occupies the third spot with four points.
The top two teams from the group will progress to the third round of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. India’s final group game will be an away clash against Asian champions Qatar on Tuesday.
