  • FAA probes Boeing over alleged 787 Dreamliner inspection record falsification.
  • Boeing faces scrutiny amid safety concerns and whistleblower allegations.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated an investigation into allegations that employees at Boeing may have falsified inspection records for the 787 Dreamliner aircraft. This probe was launched after Boeing voluntarily disclosed concerns regarding potential lapses in required inspections to ensure adequate bonding and grounding at the juncture where the wings join the fuselage on certain 787 Dreamliner airplanes.

In a statement, an FAA spokesperson confirmed the investigation and stated that the agency is examining whether Boeing completed the necessary inspections and whether there is evidence of falsification of aircraft records by company employees. Boeing, in response to internal observations of irregularities, promptly notified regulators and initiated reinspection procedures for all 787 airplanes within the production system. Additionally, the company is tasked with developing a comprehensive plan to address the in-service fleet.

Scott Stocker, head of the Boeing 787 program, conveyed the company’s response to the situation in an email to staff, acknowledging violations of company policies and the necessity for swift corrective action. While Boeing’s engineering team has assessed that the misconduct did not pose an immediate safety of flight concern, it will impact customers and factory operations due to the need to conduct tests out of sequence on aircraft in the production process.

The investigation follows recent whistleblower allegations of serious flaws in the production of the 787 Dreamliner, further intensifying scrutiny on Boeing’s safety practices. This development occurs against the backdrop of ongoing concerns surrounding Boeing’s safety record, highlighted by incidents such as the door panel blowout on a Boeing 737 Max flight earlier this year. In response, the FAA has imposed restrictions on Boeing’s production expansion for the 737 MAX and mandated corrective measures to address systemic quality-control issues identified within Boeing’s operations.

These developments underscore the continued challenges facing Boeing as it navigates ongoing safety concerns and strives to maintain regulatory compliance and public trust in its aircraft manufacturing processes.
