The European Union (EU) issued a strong call on Wednesday for Israel to halt its military operation in Gaza’s Rafah, stressing that failure to do so would strain relations between the two entities.
In a statement delivered by the EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, the bloc urged Israel to cease its actions in Rafah “immediately.” The EU emphasized that the ongoing military operation was exacerbating the humanitarian situation in Gaza, disrupting aid distribution, and causing further internal displacement and suffering.
While recognizing Israel’s right to self-defense, the EU underscored the necessity for Israel to adhere to International Humanitarian Law and ensure the safety of civilians. The statement emphasized that Israel must permit the entry of humanitarian aid as mandated by international law.
Additionally, the EU condemned a recent Hamas attack on the Kerem Shalom border crossing, which obstructed the delivery of humanitarian relief supplies. The bloc called on all parties involved to intensify efforts towards achieving an immediate ceasefire and the unconditional release of hostages held by Hamas.
Israel’s military actions in Gaza, initiated in response to Hamas attacks, have drawn criticism from key allies such as the United States and the EU, as well as the United Nations. These entities have cautioned against further escalation in Rafah, citing the potential for increased civilian casualties.
