Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced plans to launch an AI-powered gaming studio under his artificial intelligence startup, xAI. The move aims to challenge what he perceives as the ideological dominance of large corporations in the gaming industry. Responding to a post by Dogecoin co-creator Billy Markus on X (formerly Twitter), Elon Musk emphasized his intention to “make games great again,” borrowing the rhetoric associated with the MAGA movement.
Markus, in his post, criticized the gaming industry for being ideologically influenced, arguing that gamers traditionally oppose corporate greed and manipulative practices. “Gamers have always rejected dumb manipulative nonsense and can tell when someone is an outsider poser. Why lean into the nonsense?” Markus wrote. In agreement, Elon Musk replied, “Too many game studios that are owned by massive corporations. xAI is going to start an AI game studio to make games great again!”
This announcement comes amid Elon Musk’s ongoing critique of the gaming industry. Recently, he expressed displeasure with the inclusion of pronoun selection features in the upcoming Xbox fantasy game Avowed, calling it “utterly unacceptable” and questioning its relevance in gaming. Elon Musk also commented on a controversial post accusing Microsoft’s gaming division of discriminatory hiring practices. The post alleged Microsoft prioritized diversity over qualifications, claiming, “Microsoft’s gaming division is excluding whites from being hired… favoring unqualified queer and black people.” Elon Musk tagged Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in his response, writing, “Um, @satyanadella, this is illegal.”
xAI, the startup behind Elon Musk’s gaming studio plans, was launched in July 2023 as a direct competitor to OpenAI. It aims to develop AI technologies with a focus on transparency and public access. In March, xAI announced it would open-source its ChatGPT alternative, “Grok,” allowing users to explore and experiment with its underlying technology.
The startup has gained significant financial backing, securing $6 billion in Series B funding in May 2023, with investors like Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital. This funding round brought xAI’s valuation to $24 billion, and an upcoming $5 billion round could potentially double this figure to $50 billion within six months.
Elon Musk’s foray into AI gaming reflects his broader mission to reshape industries through innovation, challenging existing norms while pushing technological and ideological boundaries. With the promise of integrating advanced AI into gaming, xAI’s gaming studio could redefine player experiences and industry dynamics.
