The Election Commission (EC) has announced that the schedule for the upcoming Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections will be revealed tomorrow. The Commission will hold a press conference at 3 pm on Saturday to disclose the dates for the crucial electoral processes.
The timing of this announcement holds immense significance as the term of the 17th Lok Sabha is set to conclude on June 16, coinciding with the expiration of the terms of several state assemblies. Specifically, the assemblies of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Sikkim are scheduled to end on June 11, June 2, June 24, and June 2 respectively.
The decision by the EC to unveil the election schedule comes shortly after the recent appointment of two new election commissioners, Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu. Their induction into the Commission, alongside Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, completes the three-member panel responsible for overseeing the electoral process.
It is pertinent to note that, in the previous election cycle, the EC had announced the polling schedule on March 10, 2019. The elections were conducted in seven phases, spanning from April 11 to May 19, with the counting of votes taking place on May 23.
As the EC gears up for this pivotal announcement, all eyes are set on the developments that will shape the democratic landscape in the coming months.
