Eight Indian nationals, victims of a job scam in the Hpa Lu region of Myanmar’s Myawaddy, have been successfully rescued, the Indian embassy in Yangon announced on Sunday.
The embassy reiterated its advice to Indian citizens seeking employment in Myanmar, urging them to be cautious and avoid falling prey to fake or illegal job offers.
“Eight Indian nationals, victims of a scam center in Hpa Lu, Myawaddy, were rescued and handed over safely to Myanmar police/immigration yesterday,” the embassy posted on X. “Support from Myanmar authorities and local assistance was crucial. We thank them and strongly reiterate our advisory on fake job rackets.”
Last month, the embassy issued an advisory highlighting the presence of an international crime syndicate active in the Myawaddy region on the Myanmar-Thailand border. The advisory urged Indian nationals to exercise caution before accepting job offers in the area.
“There has been an increase in the incidents of Indian nationals falling victim to international crime syndicates active in the Myawaddy region on the Myanmar-Thailand border,” the embassy stated. “We would re-emphasize the importance of adhering to our advisories on the subject and not taking any such job offers without consulting the respective Indian embassies.”
The embassy also noted a new location in the Pha Lu area, south of Myawaddy town, where most Indian victims are trafficked after being recruited from India and other countries such as Malaysia and the UAE.
In light of these developments, the embassy urged Indian nationals to avoid accepting job offers made through social media platforms or other unverified sources. “Indian nationals should not accept such job offers floated through social media platforms or other unverified sources,” the advisory emphasized. “Indian nationals are advised to check and verify the credentials of foreign employers through the Indian embassy.”
