In a recent statement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the significant voter turnout of 38% in the Srinagar parliamentary constituency, marking a notable increase from previous elections. This turnout surpasses the 14.43% polling recorded in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, showcasing a positive shift in democratic participation.
Following the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, this election marked the first general election in the valley. Polling occurred across 2,135 polling stations spanning the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency, covering assembly segments of Srinagar, Ganderbal, Pulwama, Budgam, and Shopian districts.
PM Modi emphasized the impact of Article 370’s revocation, stating, “The abrogation of Article 370 has enabled the potential and aspirations of the people to find full expression.” He applauded the enhanced voter turnout as a testament to the empowerment of the region’s populace, particularly its youth.
The 38% voter turnout in Srinagar is a significant milestone, marking the highest recorded turnout in several decades. With 24 candidates vying for victory, compared to 12 in the 2019 election, this election has garnered heightened interest and participation from the electorate.
Notably, specific assembly segments such as Chadoora, Ganderbal, Kangan, Khansahib, and Shopian recorded voter turnouts exceeding 45%, underscoring widespread enthusiasm and faith in the electoral process.
The Election Commission lauded the dedicated efforts of polling personnel and security forces in ensuring a peaceful and festive atmosphere at polling stations. With over 8,000 polling staff deployed to serve the 17.47 lakh strong electorate, rigorous measures were implemented to facilitate free, fair, and inducement-free elections.
Moreover, special provisions were made to enable Kashmiri migrant voters residing in relief camps across Delhi, Jammu, and Udhampur to participate in the electoral process. Special polling stations were established to accommodate their voting preferences.
The elevated voter turnout in Srinagar signifies a renewed spirit of democratic engagement and empowerment, reflecting the evolving landscape of political participation in the region.
