Dr. Maya Morsi, President of the National Council for Women and head of the Egyptian delegation at the 68th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, held a significant meeting with Dr. Sima Bahouth, Executive Director of UN Women. The encounter, occurring on the sidelines of the session in New York, served as a platform to explore avenues of cooperation between the two entities in common areas of interest.
Expressing her sincere appreciation, Dr. Morsi thanked Dr. Bahouth for the fruitful partnership between the Egyptian government and UN Women in advancing and empowering women across various sectors. She underscored the pivotal role of such collaboration within the framework of national projects aimed at enhancing women’s participation and empowerment.
Dr. Morsi further extended gratitude to Dr. Bahouth and UN Women for their unwavering efforts to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to Palestinian women in the Gaza Strip, in coordination with Egypt, catering specifically to their needs.
In her remarks, Dr. Morsi highlighted the pressing issue of cyber violence and emphasized the importance of reinforcing protection mechanisms for women and girls to mitigate its impact on their public participation and access to leadership roles.
In response, Dr. Bahouth commended Egypt’s leadership, particularly under President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, in the Arab region and Africa. She lauded Egypt’s pivotal role in supporting UN Women’s efforts, particularly in delivering humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, emphasizing that such endeavors wouldn’t have been possible without Egypt’s involvement. Dr. Bahouth also praised the Egyptian Red Crescent for facilitating the arrival of aid to meet the basic needs of Palestinian women.
Additionally, Dr. Bahouth commended the National Council for Women, led by Dr. Morsi, for its support of Palestinian women and their active participation in the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). She applauded Egypt’s initiatives in economically empowering women and implementing programs for financial inclusion.
