The Eden Gardens pitch controversy took a dramatic turn after curator Sujan Mukherjee backtracked on his earlier statements regarding Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane’s request for a spin-friendly track. Following KKR’s loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their opening match of IPL 2025, Rahane had expressed his desire for a pitch favoring spinners.
Mukherjee initially stated that no changes would be made, citing IPL regulations and past pitch conditions. However, as backlash grew, he later claimed he never denied any request and that the pitch was prepared as per BCCI guidelines.
KKR suffered a significant defeat against RCB, prompting Rahane to highlight the importance of a spin-friendly surface at their home ground. After the match, he stated that while the pitch had been under covers for nearly two days, he hoped that future conditions would benefit spinners. Mukherjee, however, dismissed the notion of making changes to the pitch, emphasizing that IPL franchises have no control over pitch conditions. He also pointed out that RCB spinners had taken four wickets, questioning why KKR spinners could not capitalize similarly.
Speaking to RevSportz, Mukherjee initially defended his stance, stating, “Ever since I have taken charge as Eden curator, the pitches have remained consistent. They were like this before and will remain the same.” He further emphasized that the pitch conditions would not be altered based on team preferences, reinforcing that the home franchise does not dictate pitch preparation.
However, as the controversy gained traction, Mukherjee changed his stance in an interview with Sports Tak. He stated that no official request was made by KKR regarding pitch conditions. “No official or player asked for a specific pitch for the first match. A coach casually inquired about the surface, and I simply mentioned that it would offer turn while remaining good for batting,” he clarified. He also reiterated his strong relationship with KKR, insisting that the pitch was created in line with BCCI’s directives and dismissing accusations against him as baseless.
The issue escalated when former New Zealand pacer Simon Doull criticized Mukherjee’s comments, arguing that if the Eden curator was unwilling to accommodate KKR’s requirements, the franchise should consider relocating. “KKR pays stadium fees and contributes to the IPL economy. If the curator disregards the home team’s preferences, they should consider moving elsewhere,” Doull remarked.
Despite the initial setback, KKR bounced back with a victory against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati, shifting the focus back to their on-field performances. However, the controversy surrounding Eden Gardens’ pitch preparation has raised fresh debates about the role of curators in accommodating home team preferences in IPL.
