The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted searches on Thursday at four locations in Kolkata, including two flats belonging to former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh. These raids are part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged financial scam involving the institution, which gained further prominence following the tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor on August 9.
The ED’s raids extended to the Laketown and Tala areas of the city, where they targeted an office belonging to a medical supplier and the residence of a vendor who provided medicines to the RG Kar hospital.
This action follows a series of previous raids carried out by the ED at multiple locations in West Bengal, including Howrah, Sonarpur, and Hooghly. The ED is investigating financial irregularities linked to RG Kar Medical College, where Dr. Ghosh served as principal.
Approximately two weeks ago, the ED registered a case based on an FIR filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which accused Dr. Ghosh of involvement in the financial misconduct at RG Kar Medical College. The CBI’s FIR includes charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, dishonesty, and violations under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. These are serious, non-bailable offences.
Dr. Ghosh served as the principal of RG Kar Medical College from February 2021 until September 2023. Although he was transferred in October 2023, he resumed his role at the hospital a month later. His tenure continued until the day of the horrific incident involving the trainee doctor.
On September 2, Dr. Ghosh was arrested by the CBI in connection with the corruption case and was subsequently remanded to the agency’s custody.
