Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to present the Economic Survey 2025 in Parliament today at 12 p.m., a day before unveiling the much-anticipated Union Budget for the fiscal year 2025-26. The Economic Survey serves as a crucial pre-budget document, providing a comprehensive assessment of the country’s economic performance over the past fiscal year and offering insights into future prospects.
The document, prepared under the supervision of Chief Economic Advisor V. Anantha Nageswaran, is compiled by the economic division of the Department of Economic Affairs in the Ministry of Finance. It highlights key macroeconomic indicators, growth trajectories, and sectoral performance, setting the stage for policy directions that may be reflected in the upcoming budget. The survey not only evaluates the health of the Indian economy but also outlines possible policy measures for sustainable growth.
The Economic Survey will be tabled in the Lok Sabha at 12 p.m. and later in the Rajya Sabha at 2 p.m. It plays a significant role in shaping expectations for the Union Budget, often indicating the broader fiscal approach that the government may take in the upcoming financial year. The theme of the Economic Survey also provides valuable insight into the administration’s priorities. In 2024, the theme revolved around economic resilience, signaling a focus on stability and growth despite global uncertainties.
The budget session of Parliament, which commences today, will run in two phases from January 31 to April 4. The first phase will conclude on February 13, followed by an inter-session break before resuming on March 10. The session will begin with President Droupadi Murmu addressing a joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament at 11 a.m. After the President’s address, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will formally table the Economic Survey in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
Before the presentation of the Union Budget on February 1, a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be held, where ministers will be briefed on the key aspects of the budget, and formal approval will be secured. This year’s budget presentation marks Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s eighth consecutive budget, reinforcing her role in shaping India’s economic policies.
As the government gears up to present the final full-year budget before the general elections, expectations are high regarding economic reforms, fiscal prudence, and growth-oriented measures. The Economic Survey will set the stage, offering crucial insights that could shape India’s economic trajectory in the upcoming year.
