Donald Trump, the US president-elect, is poised to receive Time magazine’s prestigious title of “Person of the Year” while marking the occasion by ringing the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on Thursday. This recognition would cement Trump’s position as a global figure of influence and reflect the enduring impact of his political and business endeavors.
The announcement of the title is expected on the same day Trump will perform the ceremonial ringing of the NYSE bell, which symbolizes the start of the trading day at the world’s largest stock exchange. This gesture, often reserved for company executives commemorating major corporate achievements, has also been extended to notable public figures, including former US President Ronald Reagan, South African leader Nelson Mandela, and actor-turned-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Time magazine has not officially confirmed the selection, and a spokesperson declined to comment on the matter. However, Politico first reported Trump’s impending recognition and the associated plans, which have since gained traction.
Donald Trump, who built his fortune as a New York real estate mogul before entering the political arena, has long associated his success with economic indicators such as the stock market. His presidency saw a strong focus on market performance as a measure of achievement, and the financial markets have so far responded positively to his re-election.
This will not be Trump’s first appearance as Time’s “Person of the Year.” The Republican leader was previously awarded the title in 2016, following his initial election as president. The magazine has used the title to highlight individuals who have significantly influenced global events, whether positively or controversially. Notably, in 2020, Time honored Democratic President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris after their victory over Trump. Last year, pop icon Taylor Swift was named “Person of the Year” for her groundbreaking influence in the entertainment industry.
The ringing of the NYSE bell is regarded as a prestigious act, often symbolizing milestones of achievement and celebration. Trump’s participation in the ceremony underscores his strong ties to New York, both as a businessman and as a political figure, and highlights his ongoing prominence in American public life. This dual event—a financial and symbolic gesture—signals his enduring impact as both a businessman and a politician.
