In a message on the fundraising page, Donald Trump decried the trial as a “rigged political Witch Hunt” and insisted on his innocence despite being convicted of 34 counts of false accounting. The surge of Donald Trump supporters attempting to donate overwhelmed the official Republican Party donation platform, WinRed, causing the site to crash within minutes.
While Donald Trump became the first criminally convicted former US president, the verdict does not bar him from campaigning for another term. His sentencing is scheduled for July 11.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden’s campaign capitalized on Donald Trump’s legal troubles by urging supporters to donate to keep him out of the Oval Office.
Donald Trump has frequently framed his legal battles as a fight against the “deep state” and President Biden’s administration, portraying himself as a martyr for his supporters’ cause. In previous statements, he has compared himself to Nelson Mandela and Jesus Christ, drawing sharp criticism from President Biden’s campaign team.
