U.S. President Donald Trump claimed credit for mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, suggesting that tensions had escalated dangerously close to a nuclear conflict. He referred to the potential escalation as the “n-word,” indicating a nuclear war, and described his intervention as one of his most significant yet underappreciated diplomatic achievements.

Donald Trump emphasized that the animosity between the two nations had reached a level where the next step could have been catastrophic. He stated, “It was getting deeper. Everyone was stronger, stronger to a point where the next one was gonna be, you know what… the n-word,” clarifying that he meant “nuclear.” He expressed frustration that his efforts in de-escalating the situation might not receive the recognition they deserve.

The Indian government, however, has denied any third-party involvement in the ceasefire agreement. Official statements from India assert that the understanding was reached through bilateral discussions between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan. This stance underscores India’s long-standing policy of addressing issues with Pakistan bilaterally, without external mediation.

The ceasefire came in the wake of Operation Sindoor, initiated by India in response to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam that resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians. Under this operation, India conducted precision strikes targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, reportedly neutralizing over 100 militants associated with groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. Pakistan’s retaliatory actions included cross-border shelling and attempted drone attacks on Indian military bases, prompting further Indian strikes on Pakistani radar stations, airfields, and communication hubs.

Despite the ceasefire agreement announced on May 10, incidents of drone sightings and explosions were reported in Jammu and Kashmir shortly thereafter, leading to air defense responses by Indian security forces. These developments highlight the fragile nature of the ceasefire and the ongoing volatility in the region.

Donald Trump’s assertions have sparked discussions about the role of international actors in the India-Pakistan conflict and the complexities of diplomatic interventions in such high-stakes situations. While his claims have been met with skepticism by Indian officials, they underscore the global concern over the potential for escalation between two nuclear-armed neighbors.
