Dhiraj Bommadevara’s participation in the season-opening Archery World Cup in Florida was clouded by uncertainty, as persistent delays in his US visa left his participation hanging in the balance. After a last-minute arrival in Florida, Dhiraj had to rush straight from the airport to the venue in Auburndale, where he managed to not only compete but also secure two medals – a bronze in the individual event and a silver in the men’s team event. Despite the chaos leading up to the event, Dhiraj maintained his focus and delivered a solid performance.
Challenges of Reaching the Event
The journey to the competition was filled with obstacles. Dhiraj was one of the few Indian athletes who was able to make it to the World Cup after his visa was delayed. While most women’s compound archers from India missed the event due to similar delays, Dhiraj’s flight was carefully timed to ensure he arrived just in time for the qualification round. The tight schedule, with only 90 minutes separating his New York to Florida flight, required assistance from World Archery to expedite his transfer through the airport, allowing him to catch up on time.
Mental Preparation Amid Chaos
Despite the travel chaos, Dhiraj stayed mentally prepared throughout. During his flight, he focused on visualizing his performance and preparing himself for the tournament. He acknowledged that the challenge was not just about making it to the competition, but about staying mentally sharp despite jetlag and the pressure of arriving last minute. When the qualification round began, Dhiraj stood sixth and then went on to clinch the individual bronze after a tightly contested match.
In the men’s team event, Dhiraj’s contributions were key in taking the team to the final, though they fell short against China. Despite these setbacks, he showcased excellent composure in his individual event, especially when he was trailing 2-4 in the bronze medal match against Spain’s Andres Temino Mediel. Dhiraj’s performance in the final sets, with five 10s including two Xs, helped him pull off a remarkable comeback and win the bronze. This victory marked a significant achievement for Dhiraj, boosting his confidence ahead of future competitions, including the next leg of the World Cup in Shanghai.
