Dense fog gripped Delhi on Friday morning as the national capital recorded a temperature of 9.6 degrees Celsius at 5.30 am, according to the India Meteorological Department. The chilling cold wave has brought visibility to a minimum, adding to the woes of daily commuters. The city’s air quality has further declined from ‘poor’ to ‘very poor,’ exacerbating the impact of the annual fog and smog season, which has been intensified this year due to rising pollution levels. This hazardous weather has already led to several road accidents across the country, underscoring the critical need for safe driving practices.

As visibility plummets, drivers face the dual challenge of navigating through dense fog and maintaining road safety. Reduced visibility significantly delays reaction and braking times, making cautious and informed driving crucial. Experts suggest maintaining lower speeds to allow adequate time for reactions and ensuring a safe distance from other vehicles to minimize the risk of collisions. The use of proper lighting is another essential measure. Low-beam headlights are recommended over high beams, as the latter can reflect off the fog, further impairing visibility. Vehicles equipped with fog lamps should utilize them, particularly the rear fog lamps, which serve as a warning signal for vehicles trailing behind.

Another common but potentially dangerous practice is driving with hazard lights on. These lights are intended solely for stationary vehicles to signal a breakdown or emergency. Using hazard lights while in motion can confuse other drivers and heighten the likelihood of accidents.

In cases where visibility drops to a critical level, the safest course of action is to park the vehicle in a secure location off the road. Drivers should ensure their parking and hazard lights are activated to alert others of their stationary position. For those unable to stop, lane markers can provide a vital guide to staying on course. Following these markers diligently helps maintain focus and prevents veering into oncoming traffic, especially on single-lane roads where maintaining distance from opposing vehicles is imperative.

As Delhi and its surrounding regions continue to battle the dual challenges of cold waves and escalating pollution, adhering to these safety measures can be life-saving. Authorities have urged drivers to remain vigilant, plan their journeys carefully, and prioritize safety above all else during this treacherous fog season.
