Delhi experienced scorching temperatures surpassing 47 degrees Celsius, prompting a ‘red alert’ for the next five days due to severe heatwave conditions. The capital’s peak power demand surged to its highest for May, prompting school closures.

In recent days, Delhi witnessed a steady temperature rise, with Sunday marking the highest recorded temperature this summer at 44.4 degrees Celsius. On Monday, Najafgarh recorded a high of 47.4 degrees Celsius, the second-highest maximum temperature this season.

Low-income households, facing water and cooling challenges, and individuals with outdoor commitments endure the oppressive heat. The Directorate of Education ordered school closures till June 30 due to the ongoing severe heatwave.

Realtime data revealed Delhi’s peak power demand hit 7,572 MW, the highest-ever for May, highlighting the strain on resources. The National Zoological Park heightened animal care efforts to combat the heat.

The IMD forecasted heatwave conditions, urging precautions, especially for vulnerable groups. Heat-related illnesses pose significant health risks, emphasizing the need for hydration and avoidance of heat exposure.

As Delhi continues to battle extreme temperatures, residents are urged to stay hydrated and take necessary precautions to mitigate heat-related risks.
